An abstract painter with an International reputation, William Gear studied painting at Edinburgh College of Art 1932-37. After studying in Paris with Fernand Leger, Gear won a scholarship which enabled him to travel in Italy and the Balkans.

After serving with the Army in WWII Gear lived in France until 1950. During this fertile time he formed a strong association with members of the COBRA Group. They influenced his style resulting in Gear's emergence as a fully abstract painter.

Returning to Britain in 1950 Gear won a Festival of Britain Purchase Prize in 1951. In 1958 he was made curator of Towner Art Gallery Eastbourne and in 1964 Head of the Faculty of Fine Art in Birmingham College of Art.

Gear won the Lorne Fellowship in 1975 and retired from teaching by which time he had built up an impressive international exhibiting record showing his vibrant and colourful abstracts.

Redfern Gallery held Gear's fifty year retrospective in 1997 and a solo show in 2003. The exhibition William Gear and COBRA toured from Aberdeen Art Gallery 1997-98. The Tate Gallery and many provincial and international collections hold his work. Gear was elected Senior RA in 1995.
