This wonderful small hanging corner cupboard with stepped upper shelves is a charming example of English 18th century japanning. The decoration is enhanced by unusual brightly coloured naive painted decoration, with a combination of Oriental motifs and more atypical European elements, including a lady with golden ringlets tumbling about her shoulders, standing on a hillock under a blue and scarlet parasol held by an exotically dressed attendant (possibly meant to represent a North American Indian), and with a little silvered dog at her feet. The decoration is original and is in excellent condition. English, circa 1730 Height 45 1/4" (115cm) Width (across front) 21 1/2" (54.6cm) Depth (at sides) 14" (35.6cm)
