A very elegant and unusual late 18th century English chimneypiece in Italian statuary marble inlaid with Derbyshire Blue John, a semi-precious stone mined at Castleton in Derbyshire and used in the manufacture of decorative items during the 18th and 19th centuries.

The chimneypiece has panelled jambs headed by carved ram’s masks draped with inlaid Blue John beading beneath finely carved stiff leaf acanthus capitals terminating with corner blocks carved with low relief classical urns. The frieze with fluted panels above fine pearl bead carving flanking a centre tablet with a rectangular Blue John panel framed within an inlaid Greek Key border. The chimneypiece has a corniced shelf incorporating a tier of inlaid dentil work.
