An exceptional stick stand ornamented with a finely cast black and white hound guarding the sticks. Probably from the Coalbrookdale in Shropshire where iron ore was first smelted by Abraham Darby in the 18th century using ‘coking coal’. As it contained fewer impurities than normal coal, the iron it produced was of superior quality.
English, cast iron, circa 1850
Height: 29.5 inches Width: 17 inches Depth: 9 inches
