A charming ink and watercolour painting "Up on Mount Ephraim" Tunbridge Wells, showing figures of the 1940s period enjoying a promenade. Included in the scene, centre, is Pearson's housekeeper and mistress, and her small dog. Read often included her in his pictures as a sort of trade mark.
Read is becoming increasingly better known as an Artist and Illustrator whose work – probably influenced by French and European drawings – prefigured that of Edward Ardizzone, who was stylistically similar.
Although Read regularly submitted works to the Royal Academy’s annual exhibition, he only found success in his mid Forties but he then regularly exhibited at the Alpine Gallery, the New English Art Club, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the ‘National Society Of Painters Sculptors and Gravers’, He was amember of The Pastel Society and the National Society Of British Artists.
