A Mediterranean garden and small estate with extensive plantings is depicted carved out of the unpromising barren landscape outside the port of Toulon with the attributes of many of the surviving views of Antique gardens. Regularity of form within the precise delineation afforded the man-made barriers of walls pierced by utilitarian decorative gates are an ancient civilizing imposition upon nature from ancient times. The ancient Roman simplicity of plan and buildings derives from those active settlers of the southern French coast, the true date seen in the distant sparsely dotted buildings.

A great naval base, Toulon supported a flourishing commercial and professional middle class to which Reverdit belonged. The estate represented relief from the stifling hot summers of the port, easily accessible by a direct route clearly visible in the accompanying scene. Marked on a map of 1826 the estate is now under a suburb.
