Painting with a pedigree. This painting was bought (for 2.500 Fl. the 07/12/1883) by Franz Joseph I (Vienna 1830-1916 Vienna), Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary, Croatia and Bohemia (husband of the famous Sissi). He offered it to Katherina Schratt (Baden bei Wien 1853-1940 Vienna), his confidante (refer to this link for more information https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katharina_Schratt), to enhance her palace in Vienna. On the back of the painting we still find the inscription referring to the Imperial property. Since Katherina Schratt survived the Emperor 24 years and according her gambling addiction (her gambling debts were relieved by the Emperor during his lifetime) this painting was probably sold to pay back gambling debts and came in private hands. We also find on the back of the painting a seal of the US Customs. We suspect that this painting, above the exhibitions already mentioned, was also exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 where the catalogue mentions a large painting of von Lichtenfels belonging to the Emperor, representing a bay edged with russet stained rocks.
