Gustave Lino was a French landscape and portrait painter of considerable quality who painted in a fluid manner with light pastel colours. In 1912 at the age of 19 he sailed for Algiers after which he travelled extensively in Spain, and North Africa.

In 1918 he returned to Algiers where he was a pupil of Georges Rochegrosse. He exhibited at the Salon of French Artists in 1926 and the Danton Gallery, rue La Boetie in 1927. He also exhibited works at the Tunisian Salon and held various art exhibitions in North Africa until 1950.

In 2003 he was represented at the group exhibition Lumineuse Algérie at the Musée National de la Marine in Toulon. In this charming depiction of Venice, Lino has painted a view of the Church of St Mary of the Presentation, commonly known as the Zitelle with Gondalas in the foreground looking onto the Island of Guidecca.
