A completely original bell-striking mantel clock by this eminent maker, the youngest of the Vulliamy clock-making dynasty, Benjamin Lewis. Benjamin Lewis was five times elected Master of the Clockmakers’ Company. From records still in existence, Roger Smith has used the surviving data to compile a graph from which unrecorded clocks can be fairly accurately dated. According to this, number 1868 would appear to date from c.1849.

The attractive oak pitched pediment case with wooden fretwork panels to the door and sides stands 18 inches high.

The 7-inch silvered Roman numeral dial is signed Vulliamy, London, No. 1868, with a strike/silent lever at XII.

The substantial five-pillar, eight-day, twin chain fusee movement is also signed and numbered for Vulliamy no. 1868. It feautures half dead-beat escapement and a pull repeat mechanism.

The heavy brass-bob pendulum with T-bar suspension typical of the maker bears the same number as movement and dial.
