Item Description / Dealer Expertise

A late 19th century Victorian carved walnut stationery box.

The box has a brass plate stating "Philip. Son & Nephew. Liverpool" and the lock is stamped "Bramah London". The top hinges vertical and the front falls forward and then hinges open again to the leather covered writing surface. The top writing surface has a brass catch and handle and lifts to reveal a storage area.

The action of the front falling forward allows the ink well and pen storage area to spring forward, this compartment has two inkwells, a lidded stamp box and pen tray. Above the inkwells are three drawers with figured walnut veneered fronts and brass handles, the drawers have their original leather lining.

The main body of the box is compartmentalised to hold stationery, envelopes, pamphlets and in the centre are two walnut edged ceramic note boards held in brass brackets.

To the underside of the lid is a leather pen and ruler holder with one original ivory ruler. The exterior of the box is carved and has two heavy quality brass carrying handles.

The box is in excellent original condition but does not have a key. (Circa 1890)
