The Marble Works at Ashford came to prominence in the 19th century when the art of inlaying was introduced at the suggestion of the Duke of Devonshire who had seen Florentine mosaics while on a visit to Italy. This example is probably from the workshops of T. Woodruff of Bakewell, whose work was exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The inlaid top is highlighted with colour, the border with trailing vine leaves and a central cartouche of olive branch, music, musical instruments and ribbon. The top is inset within crosscut walnut mouldings over a walnut base with bobbin turned legs to turned platform base supported by legs of inverted umbrella form.
