Charles Kuwasseg was born at Draveil, Paris in 1838 the son of the Austrian artist Karl Joseph Kuwasseg (1802- 1877) and the nephew of Joseph and Anton, also artists. His father undoubtedly played an influential role in his development as like him he specialised in coastal and marine scenes. He spent his initial training with his father but later became a sailor, travelling the world. After returning to France in 1883 he continued his artistic studies training under the marine artist Jean-Baptiste Henri Durand-Brager (1814-1879) and Jean-Baptiste Isabey (1767 – 1855). In 1855, he made his debut at the Paris Salon continuing to regularly exhibit there and in 1892 won a 3rd class medal. Kuwasseg later became a professor of art but continued to paint scenes of the Breton and Normandy coast and the North Sea. He died in January 1877 at Paris.
A number of his works can be found in museums and collections including Pontoise, Rouen, Perigueux, Digne, La Rochelle and Montreal Museum.
The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
