The rediscovery of this painting is the most significant event in the history of and study of the Daniells' work. Shellim listed only nine oil paintings of Chinese subjects by either Thomas or William Daniell. One of these nine entries carried the observation 'Present whereabouts unknown'. Fortunately a photograph of the painting survived in Sir Evan Cotton's papers in the former India Office Records (now in the British Library) There is no doubt that the present work, which in recent years has hung unrecognised in a French collection, is that formally 'lost' painting.
