Jules Moigniez was a well-known animal sculptor who was born in Senlis in 1835, the son of a metal gilder. He studied under Paul Comolera (1818 – 1897) who was to have a great influence on his work and first exhibited at the 1855 Exposition Universelle in Paris. He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1859 to 1892 and enjoyed success at home and abroad, exhibiting in England and the United States. In 1857, his father opened a foundry to cast his bronzes which were of excellent quality. In 1869, Moigniez became ill and in 1894 he took his own life. During his lifetime, Moignez mainly produced many sculptures of animals however, it is for his excellent quality studies of dogs, birds and horses that he is perhaps best known.
