Charles-Alexandre Coëssin de la Fosse was a French historical painter born in Lisieux, Normandy in 1829. He studied under François-Edouard Picot (1786-1868) and Thomas Couture (1815-1879). In 1857, he went to Paris and started exhibiting at the Salon which he continued to do throughout his life. He also exhibited at the Salons of Vienna and Munich. In 1873, he won a third class medal at the Paris Salon for his painting ‘The Tambourine Player’. He died in Paris in 1910.

Coëssin specialised in historical genre scenes in the neoclassical style. His paintings are highly sophisticated and skilled in their composition and colour. Examples of his work are held by a number of French museums including Bayeux, Gray, Liège, Lisieux, Reims, Paris and Saint-Etienne. His paintings can also be found at the Museum of New York & the Courtauld Institute.

The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
