“WHO IS THE FAIREST?”

EMIL PAP

Born 1884
Signed
Oil on canvas 23 ¾ x 31 ½ inches
Framed 39 ¾ x 32 inches
Emil Pap was born in Szolnok in Hungary. He moved to Budapest where he studied at the Academy.
He specialized in society portrait commissions as the mainstream of his career, but also painted a large number of excellent genre scenes which display his talent for natural poses and strong, confident brushwork. Light and shade are the very essence of his pictures allied to a great use of contrast.

Although there is little recorded about his lifetime his work is now amongst the most widely recognized Hungarian paintings of his period.

Bibl: Benezit; Volmer
