Mrs. Russell Sage: Russell Sage (4th August 1816 – 22nd July 1906) was a financier, railroad executive and Whig politician from New York, United States. Mrs. Russell Sage is the former Margaret Olivia Slocum (1828-1918), his second wife, whom he married in 1869. When he died in 1906, Olivia Sage inherited his fortune, which was unrestricted for her use. She used a major portion of the money for philanthropic purposes, endowing a number of buildings and institutions in his name to benefit women's education: she established the Russell Sage Foundation in 1907, founded the Russell Sage College in Troy for women in 1916 and gave millions of dollars to educational institutions and women’s organisations. She left the Metropolitan Museum a number of pieces of English furniture – one of which was this chest on stand.
Given to the Metropolitan Museum by Mrs. Russell Sage in 1909.
