With a revolving top birdcage action, on a turned baluster column and supported by flat boarded legs. The table base with a turned decorative finial. Part of one bar beneath has been moved sideways, but original.

For a similar joined tripod pedestal table, see Victor Chinnery, ‘Oak Furniture: The British Tradition’, (Antique Collectors’ Club, 1979), p.298, Figure 3:185a-b, which also has a birdcage movement. Chinnery discusses the construction of a pedestal table – with a single pillar or support, a spreading tripod or cruciform base, and a ‘birdcage movement, whereby the loose top is fitted to the stem by a bearer which allows the top to revolve freely. The base of the cage holds the whole in assembly steady, and a peg through the stem secures it in place.’ He comments that: ‘[t]he increasing popularity of this type of table at the end of the seventeenth century and through the eighteenth, no doubt reflects the mounting consumption of tea and other hot beverages such as coffee and chocolate. This table thus played its part in the important bourgeois ritual of tea and chatter’ (ibid, p.296).
