An early Victorian Writing Prize in the form of a Quill Pen, London 1839, Rawlings and Summers. The spine of the quill is engraved ''Prize Pen gained by W. Banting at Dr. Lord's School, Tooting Midsummer 1840.'
A number of school prizes in silver awarded by Dr. Lord's school are mentioned in M.E. Grimshaw, 'Silver Medals, Badges and Trophies from Schools in the British Isles 1550-1850.' Publ. privately.
The firm of T. and W. Banting of St. James's were well known undertakers and carried out all Royal funerals from 1811. In 1863, William Banting [1796-1878] published a booklet on dieting, 'A Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public'. He and his family lived in Kensington. The W. Banting on this quill prize was undoubtedly William Banting [1826-1901], the second son of William Banting senior.
Good. The maker's mark is possible to read but poorly struck.
