Elegant early 19th Century mahogany Stick Barometer; with arched top over silvered brass register plate, classically engraved, signed by the maker and bearing mercury Fahrenheit thermometer and manually operated vernier slide. The plate is protected by hinged, glazed door. The finely patinated trunk, edge moulded, with book-matched veneers, and with exposed barometer tube terminating within hemispherical cistern cover.


Brother of John, the renowned cartographer, William Cary, himself, achieved widespread acclaim as an instrument-maker. Operating from headquarters in The Strand from 1789 until his death in 1825, his firm was acquired by two of John’s sons, and thrived until 1890.
