William Gilbert Foster was a landscape and genre painter. He was born in Manchester in 1855 but moved as a child with his family to Leeds. He studied art under his father, a portrait painter. He taught at Leeds Grammar School and the Leeds School of Art. In addition to his home and studio in Leeds, Foster purchased a cottage in Runswick Bay on the North Yorkshire coast, where he would spend the summer months. It was here that he mixed with the colony of artists that had congregated around Staithes, just above Runswick Bay. He was a Member of the Royal Society of British Artists and also exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and the Liverpool & Manchester Academies. His work is represented in several public galleries. Although no title is given, the painting is clearly the harbour at North Shields.

The painting is an oil on canvas in original condition except for a small repair (small patch visible on the reverse). It is housed in a new frame, though contemporary to the painting in syle.
