A very rare late 17th century red and gilt lacquer chest of drawers of exceptional beauty and mellow colour. The piece consists of six drawers, three short and three long, and there is fine graduation from top to bottom. They all retain their original oak linings. There is a double D applied moulding surrounding each drawer and the original ogee moulding around the base. The turned bun feet are replaced and the engraved brass backplates, escutcheons and loop handles are original.

The red lacquer ground and raised gilt decoration on the drawer fronts is very original. It is restrained in style and consists of oriental figures in a landscape and exotic birds and animals of great charm. The ends and top have the same mellow red background colour and boldly drawn human figures and birds set in a leafy oriental landscape.

This is a beautifully drawn piece of furniture which stands very well both in its overall tight proportions and beautifully configured drawers. The red and gilt lacquer decoration of this rare chest, which originally would have stood on a low stand with bun feet, is extremely rare and of exceptional quality.
