This superb quality antique secretaire bookcase is made from a wonderfully figured mahogany, and dates from the William IV period, circa 1835. It has an unusual stepped moulded cornice above a deep frieze below which are two glazed doors with half round moulded glazing bars and key with working lock. The interior of the upper section has three adjustable shelves.
The lower section has a beautifully figured drawer front with original turned handles. When opened, the drawer front drops down to reveal an interior containing six rosewood drawers (very rare and a sign of quality) and several pigeon holes. Below the secretaire drawer there are two beautifully figured doors with moulded edge and key with working lock. The interior has one removable shelf. Framing the cupboard doors are two pilasters with Corinthian capitals. This quality antique bookcase stands on a plain plinth, splits into two sections for ease of removal and is a rich, warm medium mahogany with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.
