Excellent, rare and ingeniously designed pair of William IV sterling silver travelling candle sticks which fit into the two screwed together bases when they are dismantled.
Maker: Samuel Whitford. London 1831.

The set consists of two candlesticks, a snuffer and a pair of scissor snuffers. All these fit into one of the bases and the two bases screw together to form a compact receptacle.
All the items are fully hallmarked and of very good gauge as befitted the status of the owner. Each of the items is also engraved with a contemporary Duke's coronet and a Gothic G for the family name or title.
Scissor snuffers were always made by a different maker and these are made by Edward, Edward Jnr., John and W. Barnard and were hallmarked in 1832. The scissors are also engraved with the same ducal coronet and family initial.
This set has obviously been looked after with great care.
