A superb and rare William IV cushion shaped silver Vinaigrette with pale gilding, the lid set with a classical Roman scene in white slip under a domed crystal cover depicting; “Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi”, framed by engraved feather scrolls that are repeated on a band of decoration to the plain silver base. The silver gilt interior with unusual and intricately pierced hinged “musical”grille showing a lute, a tambourine, sheet music and two wind instruments set among flowers and leaves.

The image is probably taken from a print by Francesco Bartolozzi, an Italian engraver who worked in England from 1764-1815. He was "Engraver to the King" with a salary of £300 a year. The print depicts Cornelia, Mother of the Gracchi, Showing Her Children As Her Only Ornaments.
