This cup is the work of English silversmith William Ker Reid, originally a partner of the Newcastle firm Reid & Sons, but who had formed his own firm based in London from 1812. The cup dates from 1833, but there is an inscription on the reverse cartouche which dates from 1871. It was inscribed as a trophy for the winner of a horse race: the inscription reads 'Brown Bess, winner of the United Hunt Stakes Beaufort Hunt Steeplechases, April 3rd 1871, Ridden by Sir Thomas Dancer Bart'.

On the front cartouche there is a baccanial mask, and the cup is chased and embossed. There are twin loop handles, each of which is mounted with a silver caryatid. The cup takes a cylindrical shape.
