Barnsley-born Mellor was trained by his painter-father Joseph Mellor and was a landscape painter who primarily painted in oil. He worked around the Lake District, North Wales, and the Pennines, before settling in Ilkley and later Harrogate, North Yorkshire, until his death in 1931. Mellor favoured painting summer or early autumn scenes, playing on rich sunlight, which bathed the scenes in light and shade, paying very close attention to detail. Although he chose not to exhibit in London he was extremely successful. Exhibited or known works include, "A Peep of Windermere", and "On the Wharfe". With strength of composition and patient observation Mellor painted enchanting records of Britain’s timeless landscape.
