William was trained by his artist-father Joseph and was a landscape artist who primarily specialised in oil. He worked around the Lake District, North Wales, and the Pennines, before settling in Ilkley and later Harrogate, North Yorkshire, until his death in 1931. Mellor favoured painting summer or early autumn scenes, playing on rich sunlight, which bathed the scenes in light and shade, paying very close attention to detail. Although he chose not to exhibit in London he was extremely successful. Exhibited or known works include, A Peep of Windermere; and On the Wharfe.
