A colourful portrait miniature of a gentleman wearing a brown jacket and waistcoat, white chemise and stock. His hair is not powdered but worn naturally, there was a brief period during 1765 when this was the fashion.

Watercolour on ivory in an oval turned wood frame.

The colours on the miniature are very bright and clear.

William Pether was born in Carlisle and studied under Thomas Frye. He exhibited at the Free Society and Society of Artiists 1761-1780. He worked in London, Richmond, Nottingham eventually settling in Bristol. His pupils included Henry Edridge. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1781-94.
