WILLIAM SAMUEL PARROTT
1813 – 1869
The Gatehouse, Honfleur
Oil on canvas
Frame size: 44¾ x 57 inches / 114 x 144.75 cm
This is a stunning painting in very good condition. The Gatehouse is part of the Old Customs house where all shipping had to stop before entering the marina. Parrott was mainly a topographical painter, watercolourist and lithographer. He is best known for his paintings of France and Italy. His English paintings are comparatively few, with some fine views of Windsor, Eton and Henley.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy, British Institutes, Suffolk Street Galleries and elsewhere in the Provinces. He also exhibited abroad in Italy and France. His paintings in England are represented in the Tate, National Maritime, Sheffield, Wandsworth and Brighton museum. Abroad he is represented in France at the Rouen Musee, Quimper Musee, the Carnavalet Musee in Paris, and elsewhere worldwide. He published a set of lithographs, Paris et ses Environs.
