Edward Aubrey Hunt was a landscape painter and orientalist born in Weymouth, Massachusetts on 17 February 1855. He came to England in 1873, leaving shortly after to study in Paris under Jean-Leon Gerome (1824-1904). In 1878, Hunt returned to England to open a studio where he started to develop his impressionist style. In 1881 he was accepted into the Royal Academy, exhibiting 26 paintings during his lifetime. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, Grosvenor Gallery, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, as well as at a number of provincial galleries including the Glasgow Institute and Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham. He travelled in Europe, spending time in Italy in the late 1880’s where he met and painted the famous strongman Eugen Sandow. From 1896-97 he stayed in Tangier, North Africa, painting many oriental scenes. Hunt returned to England settling in Sussex. In 1884, he was elected member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Hunt was friends with many eminent painters including James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), Herbert Coop (1873-1963) and Sir John Lavery (1856-1941) who painted a portrait of him. He died at Hastings on 22 November 1922. Examples of his works are held at the National Maritime Museum, Burton Art Gallery, Devon, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Government Art Collection. |
