A fine sailormade wool work picture of H.M.S. Agememnon depicted off a headland with a cutter nearby. Excellent colour and detail, within a fine oak veneered frame of the period. English circa 1850.
H.M.S. Agamemnon was a Royal Navy 80 gun second rate-ship-of-the-line laid down at Woolwich in 1849 and launched in 1852. She was the first British battleship to be built with steam engines but due to the inefficiency of these early engines she was full square rigged on three masts. Elaborate and time consuming arrangements were made to enable the propellor to be raised out of the water to eliminate drag whenever she was to use sail, a practise abandoned by the Royal Navy in 1861.
