Rebel Stanton worked mainly as a commercial artist and illustrator. He supplied illustration for The Tatler, Picture Post and the Illustrated London News. He also produced a major decorative scheme for the interior of the Queen Mary liner. He would have been aged 24 at the outbreak of World War I and it is therefore extremely likely that he served at the front and the present work is from first hand experience. During World War II he was commission by the War Artists’ Advisory Committee to record bomb damage in London in the summer of 1941.
