Alexander Mackenzie, originally from Liverpool and brought up in Yorkshire, moved down from the north of England to Cornwall in 1951 and then to Newlyn two years later. He became involved in the later school of Newlyn artists based in West Cornwall. The old Newlyn School had established a fine group of painters who in their time created a great tradition of serious painting in the region and in the 1950s Mackenzie, along with artists such as Denis Mitchell and John Wells, carried on that tradition of painting.
