Auguste Leveque was born in Nivelles, Brabant in 1864 and died in Brussels in 1921. A Belgian School artist, Leveque was both a painter and a sculptor, and was influenced by ‘realism’ and by the Symbolist movement. He exhibited paintings at the Paris Salon, winning an Honourable Mention in 1899, and a medal in 1900, followed in 1902 by a Medal of Honour for sculpture. Auguste Leveque is best known for his figurative paintings, particularly mythical subjects such as Circe, Repos de Diane, and Hymne d’Amour.
