David Bomberg was born in Birmingham, but grew up in Whitechapel in the East End of London. He originally trained as a lithographer, but left after a year to go to the Slade School of Art in 1911. His distinctive early work consists of angular forms and intense colours. However from the late 1920's, his style became more expressionist, and he included works inspired by his travels to the Middle East and Europe. Bomberg also worked as a teacher at the Borough Polytechnic (now London South Bank University) in London from 1945 to 1953, where he taught Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff, among others.
