Gabriel Thurner was born in Mulhouse in 1840.
Thurner studied under Chabal Dussurgey and exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1865, where he mostly exhibited still-lives of flowers although he also painted woodland scenes, rustic interiors and genre scenes.
From 1880 Thurner was Professor of flower design at the École des Gobelins.
In 1884,1887, 1889, 1893, and 1900, Thurner was awarded medals of excellence for his work.
