Harold Gresley was born in Derby, son of Frank Gresley also a painter. He studied art at the Derby Art School in 1912, and at Nottingham Art School in 1919 under Arther Spooner, and later at the Royal College of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute and the Royal Watercolour Society. He worked as assistant art master at Repton College and he was elected a Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1945.
