Born in Oldham, Lancashire, in 1900, Helen Bradley was interested in art all her life, but did not start painting seriously until she was sixty, when she illustrated events from her Edwardian childhood for her granddaughter. Her work was first exhibited at the Saddleworth Art Society in 1965, then to London in 1966, and Los Angeles in 1968. In 1971, the first book was published by Jonothan Cape, and she was awarded an MBE for service to the Arts by Her Majesty, the Queen in 1979.
