Honourable mentions were accorded Spiridon in both the Paris Universelle Expositions of 1889 and 1900. His 1898 portrait of Samuel Longhorne Clemens (Mark Twain), later produced as a chromolithograph, is referred to in a letter to his publisher, Frank Bliss, as ‘much better than any photograph from life can be’.
