From Madeira to The Caribbean & The West Indies, 1833
In the year the Abolition of Slavery Act was passed, a British seaman painstakingly recorded in 68 detailed and delicate watercolours and drawings the journey of the barque “Bolivar” crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean and the West Indies.
The journey begins in January 1833 in Madeira and ends eleven month later. The views were most likely made for publication and have remained in private hands, until this, their first public exhibition.
