John Steber originally came to England from Germany due to the mounting tensions in Europe caused by the Napoleonic wars, arriving in Dover sometime circa 1805 where he set up as a watch and clockmaker. He married Hannah in 1805 and their first child, John, was born in Dover in 1806. He had a daughter who emigrated to America having married James Warren, one of the Kent clockmaking family of that name. Steber died in 1819 having at some point set-up a business in Cannon Street, London.
