1914 Born in Barnes, London. Attended Merchants Taylors’ school in London where his

art master encouraged him to draw.

1933-39 Trained and worked as a draughtsman in architectural firms in London. , working briefly with refugee German architect, Eugene C Kauffman. Attended evening courses in architecture.

1941-4 Volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm, Royal Navy, training in Detroit and Canada. Met and married his first wife Ann in 1942. Their first child Simon was born. Once qualified as a pilot, his principle duties were to escort convoys in the North Atlantic, protecting them from U Boat attacks.

1944-46 Back in London he resumed work with architect Rodney Thomas. Moved to Stroud, Gloucestershire on the estate of the architect Detmar Blow. Won a prize in a textile design competition.

1947-52 Produced, furniture, textile and architectural designs.

1947 First mobile (balsa wood and aluminium wire).

1948 Mobile for Morris Furniture Com[any, Glasgow.

1949 Small mobile for Gimpel Fils, London, where he showed in a mixed exhibition.

Exhibited with the London Group.

1950 -51 Commissioned to make a mobile for the Riverside restaurant tower at the Festival of Britain and a stabile, Cypress (50) for the garden of the Regatta restaurant. First solo exhibition with Gimpel Fils. Exhibited Green Fingers(mobile) at Battersea Park Festival Garden also, Festival of Britain, South Bank Exhibition, two sculptures and constructions.

1952 Second solo exhibition with Gimpel Fils, and included in British Council’s New Aspects of British Sculpture at the XXVI Biennale, Venice.

1956 Won the international prize for sculpture at the XXVIII Biennale, Venice.

1964 Appointed CBE in the New Year's Honours list.

From this point, Chadwick’s career continued in an upward spiral, and still continues to this day. His work is in major public collections in Australia, Belgium, Bermuda, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Isreal, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Mexico, Monaco, The Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States of America and Venezuela.

Hi bibliography contains monographs, general books on sculpture and painting, articles, broadcasts, exhibition reviews and miscellaneous articles.

Seminal reference books include, 'Lynn Chadwick, Sculptor, with a Complete Illustrated Catalogue', 1947-88, (Dennis Farr and Eva Chadwick, Clarendon Press Oxford). An up dated version was issued in 2006.
