MAURICE CANNING WILKS
Maurice Canning Wilks was a landscape & portrait painter, born Belfast. Won scholarship to study art & had early success at RHA.
Became a well-known name in Irish art circles & exhibited at the Victor Waddinton galleries, Dublin, predominately Antrim & Donegal landscapes. Also exhibited at Anderson & McAuley Gallery (Belfast).
An academician of Ulster Academy of Arts, he also had solo shows in Montreal, Boston & at the Magee Gallery, Belfast.
The Irish Times critic of the time discerned "a fine romantic spirit & considerable feeling" in his work. Ulster Museum, Armagh Co.Museum & Bangor Town Hall hold examples of his work.
Oriel Gallery, Dublin, held memorial retrospective in 1984.
