Born in Paris, Frere entered the school of 'des Beaux-Arts' in 1836 and studied under P Delaroche. After winning several medals, in 1855 Frere was awarded Knight of the Legion of Honour. He exhibited in the Paris Salon between 1842 and 1886, and 28 times at the Royal Academy between 1868 and 1885.
