Richard Parkes Bonington was born in the Suburbs of Nottingham in 1801. He first learnt painting under his father, who encouraged him, and thus he first exhibited at the Liverpool Academy aged eleven. In 1817, the family moved to Calais, where Bonington studied watercolour under Francois Louis Thomas Francia. In 1818 the family moved again, to Paris, and here, Bonington met Eugene Delacroix, and in 1820, entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts studying under Baron Gros. He first exhibited in the Paris Salon in 1822, and won a Gold medal in 1824 at the exhibition. He died of Tuberculosis in 1828 in London.
