Born and educated in Edinburgh, Hutchison began his career as an engraver of seals and studied art at the Board of Manufactures School of Art. He was particularly influenced by the Dutch School and his real speciality was painting children, invariably in Scottish coastal landscapes, in a more and more impressionist style as his life progressed.

He was a prolific artist and exhibited very widely with, for instance, 55 exhibits at the Royal Academy.
