Robert Theer (1808 -1863) was a renowned Viennese portraitist and lithographer of the early 19th century. He was born into a well-known family of artists, son of the gem cutter Joseph Theer, brother of the painters Adolf Theer and Albert Theer. In 1820 together with his family he moved to Vienna, where he studied at the Academy under Eduard Klieber. He was also trained by miniaturist Moritz Michael Daffinger. At the age of 16 years he opened his own studio and from 1828 till 1846 regularly showed his works at the annual academy exhibitions in Vienna. He soon became a very popular miniaturist of the Vienna high society and court.
