Stephen Goddard was born in Fulham, London in 1959. He began drawing and painting portraits as a child, encouraged by his mother Margaret, who was an illustrator and calligrapher.Leaving school at sixteen, he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator but continued to develop his ‘personal’ art, experimenting in techniques and exploring those of past masters. By 1983 he was exhibiting at the Royal Academy and later other leading art societies. In 1988 he made the decision to concentrate full time on the development of his art. This decision enabled him to develop his ideas in an adventurous experimental manner knowing that he had a strong ability to draw and knowledge of painting techniques through the ages. As a result he has not adopted, and resolutely does not wish to adopt, a ‘specific style’. He feels passionately that his art should evoke an emotive response in the viewer; that there should be a sense of adventure; a sense of moving on, experimenting with some other image, concept or material. Inspired by his observations of life and art, it is in his obsessive pursuit of the development of ideas facilitated by the confidence he has in himself and his work that new eclectic ideas evolve and mature on a regular basis. It is this sense of continuous change, associated with the self-evident emotive power of his work derived from his exceptional technical and observational skills, which makes his work quite different. This has encouraged collectors of his art to build up varied collections, continually inspired by his new work.He has won numerous prizes and his works have been exhibited widely in Great Britain and around the world including the USA and Hong Kong. The latest recognition of his talents came with him winning First Prize in the Singer and Friedlander - Sunday Times, Watercolour Competition 2003 with one of his remarkable images of Eric.Awards:Singer & Friedlander / Sunday Times Watercolour Competition2003: First Prize Winner1995: Second Prize Winner1997 and 1998: Prize WinnerRoyal Academy1996: Prize WinnerRoyal Society of Pastel Artists1987: Prize WinnerRoyal Society of British Artists1990: Prize WinnerRoyal Overseas League1988: Prize WinnerRoyal Water Colour Society1992: Prize WinnerGalleries and Fairs1991: Marilyn Wilson Gallery USA A joint exhibition of the works of David Hockney and Stephen Goddard in ‘An English Exhibit’1994 and 1995: Art Asia, Hong Kong1995: Art Chicago1996 to 1998: Eleanor Ettinger Gallery, New York1998 to 1999: William Beadleston Gallery, New YorkSelected ExhibitionsAnnually between 1983 and 1999: Royal Academy1986 and 1993: National Portrait Exhibition1998,1989 and 1992: New English Art Club1988 to 1991: Royal Water Colour SocietyAnnually between 1988 and 1995: Royal Institute of Water Colour Artists1989, 1990,1992,1993,1994 ,1995and 2004: Royal Portrait SocietyOne man exhibition: Art London 2004London Art Fair: 2005
