Thomas Hope was a Dutch and English merchant banker, author, philosopher, interior designer and art collector. Eager to increase public awareness of historical painting and design and to make an impression on decorative styles within the grand homes of Regency London, he created drawings of furniture and decoration that were influenced by his extensive travels throughout the world and his considerable private collection of artefacts. He published, in 1807, a folio volume entitled 'Household Furniture and Interior Decoration', depicting the very elaborate style with which he decorated his own home in Duchess Street, Cavendish Square, London.
